VCE Sociology

Subject Overview

Sociology is the study of society and its impact on social relationships. Students will examine societal change and how experiences differ between social groups. Sociology encourages students to consider how everyday activities we usually take for granted such as social norms, culture, and social trends are formed. Students will question their assumptions and reflect on their understanding of society.

Unit 1 & 2

In Unit 1 & 2 you will:

  • Explore case studies that reflect how society impacts on different experiences
  • Explore how the concept of youth has changed over the generations
  • Investigate the issues faced by youth in society due to social media, gender and sexuality, disability, ethnicity, and socio-economics
  • Examine family in Australia compared to family in another society, such as China or India
  • Examine how deviance reflects social norms and is not universal
  • Examine how crime and criminality impact society
  • Explore how society responds to crime and the effectiveness of responses

Unit 3 & 4

In Unit 3 & 4 you will:

  • Examine how awareness and views of Australian Indigenous Cultures have changed over time
  • Investigate one current issue facing Australian Indigenous culture
  • Explore the concepts of ethnicity, culture, race and othering as they relate to experiences in Multicultural Australia
  • Explore how different communities are formed and maintained, such as the Amish
  • Investigate how and why social movements form and work to change society
  • Examine the power of a social movement and how it is often opposed, such as Black Lives Matter or Schools Strike for Climate
