VCE Literature

Subject Overview

Literature is designed for students who enjoy analysing texts and exploring meaning in a range of forms – such as plays, novels, poetry etc. Students investigate the construction of texts and how they present varied views on the human experience. This subject can lead to the study of Literature at University level. Students who enrol in Literature are advised to also undertake English.

Unit 1 & 2

In Unit 1 & 2 you will:

  • Study texts from a range of forms including poetry, short stories, film, novels
  • Explore historical, cultural and social contexts
  • Closely analyse the language in texts
  • Investigate the views and values of the author
  • Focus purely on texts rather than investigating media sources as in English
  • Developing an interpretation

Unit 3 & 4

In Unit 3 & 4 you will:

  • Study the way that texts are constructed to develop an interpretation
  • Explore a range of text forms
  • Develop skills of close reading of language through passage analysis
  • Apply critical theory as a tool of analysis
  • Study the views and values of the author
  • Respond creatively to texts
  • Complete one task in oral form
