VCE Health & Human Development

Subject Overview

Students study development through the lifespan and the health issues that are associated with each stage. Students develop a capacity to respond to health information, enabling them to put strategies into action to promote health and wellbeing. Students study the health of Australians and those from other parts of the world, factors impacting on this, along with strategies and programs that exist to improve health and health status.

Unit 1 & 2

In Unit 1 & 2 you will:

  • Develop an understanding of health and wellbeing – including the five dimensions and prerequisites for health
  • Develop an understanding of the different characteristics of development for each of the stages of the lifespan
  • Investigate various factors that will impact on the transition from one stage of the lifespan to the next.
  • Explore the issues that are associated with each stage of the lifespan
  • Focus on the health and wellbeing of youth and the issues that are associated in particular with this stage of the lifespan
  • The role of nutrition as a foundation for good health in all stages

Unit 3 & 4

In Unit 3 & 4 you will:

  • Develop an understanding of what health and wellbeing is and influences on it and what influences it.
  • Look at the health status of different population groups in Australia, other countries around the world and the factors that lead to these differences
  • Study different ways to improve health status through the health care system, health promotion and programs established – nationally, globally
  • Analyse the effectiveness of health promotion and programs that have been established – nationally, globally
  • Develop an understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals
