VCE General Mathematics

Subject Overview

General Mathematics is the study of order, relations and patterns in everyday Mathematical applications. These units of study will provide learners with a general level of Mathematics understanding. Students will develop their understanding of arithmetic, data analysis, network and decision mathematics, business mathematics and matrices. All units of this course require the use of a CAS (Casio ClassPad) calculator to reach an outcome of competency.

Unit 1 & 2

In Unit 1 & 2 you will:

  • Use algebra to solve various everyday problems
  • Investigate functions and graphs and use them to display various types of data
  • Collect and use statistics to show patterns or relationships in data
  • Use data patterns to make predictions
  • Calculate balances of loans or savings accounts at various times and use this to compare options
  • Introduce Networks
  • Introduce Matrices
  • Use the CAS calculator and other technology to efficiently and accurately solve problems

Unit 3 & 4

In Unit 3 & 4 you will:

Analyse Data, including:

  • Write Statistical reports using univariate data and bivariate data
  • Make predictions using trend patterns

Investigate Recursion to model financial patterns, including:

  • Compare simple interest and compound interest
  • Explore loans over varying terms and conditions

Create, interpret and use Networks to:

  • Find the shortest path in network
  • Complete project organisation and planning

Use Matrices to:

  • Solve everyday business problems
  • Investigate population growth and decay

Types of Assessment

  • Analysis tasks
  • Application tasks
  • Mathematical Investigation
  • Tests
  • Examinations

Class Activities

  • Work in teams to problem solve application questions
  • Understand when to choose and use various forms of technology specifically using the CAS calculator
