VCE Agricultural and Horticultural Studies explores sustainable farming and plant production in real-world economic, environmental, and social contexts. Ideal for students interested in agriculture, horticulture, or land management and keen to engage in hands-on outdoor learning.

Unit 1 & 2

In Unit 1 & 2 you will:

  • Consider the uses of land in Australia as a source of food and fibre
  • Describe trends and movements in Australian agriculture and horticulture
  • Justify selection of plants and animals for agricultural and/or horticultural practices
  • Explain challenges and issues in plant production and analyse proposed solutions
  • Explain basic animal genetics
  • Analyse conditions for agricultural and/or horticultural practices through practical tasks

Unit 3 & 4

In Unit 3 & 4 you will:

  • Discuss the role of technology innovation in agricultural and horticultural industries
  • Explain current research into challenges faced by Australia’s food industries
  • Discuss prevention and control for common agricultural and/or horticultural pests
  • Explain principles of sustainable land management
  • Investigate marketing and communications strategies to promote Australian food
  • Identify types of environmental degradation
